Love Actually Talks 2019: Mindfulness – Living in the Moment
Love Actually Talks is inspired by TED™ talks. It is organised as an annual event by Love Actually Charity to encourage, inspire and motivate our members and audience with interesting and various topics.
Love Actually Talks 2019 Guest Speakers:
(Pieta House Founder, Darkness into Light Initiative, Independent Politician, Senator)
In 2016, Joan Freeman set up Pieta House, the Centre for the Prevention of Self-harm or Suicide. Having brought the service to such great heights, and having helped thousands of people in suicidal distress, in 2015 Joan readjusted her focus and brought the wonderful work of Pieta House to the US, opening up Solace House in 2017. And more recently, she has found a new and exciting purpose in her role as Senator in Seanad Éireann, focusing in mental health areas (especially for children).

When Cathy was diagnosed with cancer in 2007, she decided on the spot that she was going to fight. And fight she did, through some horrendously long spells of chemo and radiotherapy, along with surgery. Her eventual victory led her to write her first book, “Not The Year You Had Planned”, published in 2011. While her first book is directed at cancer survivors, this second book (“Stronger Than Yesterday”, published in 2016) has a much wider appeal, aimed at virtually anyone who has endured a rough patch. She also donated share of her proceeds from the sales of her books to two charities of her choice.
Mr. Sanbing Shen
(Regenerative Medicine, Medicine)
Prof. Shen is leading a research group working on animal model and human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) models of brain disorders at REMEDI, School of Medicine, NUI Galway. His team has collaborated with Irish clinicians and now generated iPSCs from a total of 50 individuals of healthy controls, and patients with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD), Fragile X Syndrome (FXS), Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), and Long QT syndrome (LQTS), all of which are associated with specific genetic lesions.
The event will be limited to two and half hours including registration, Speaker 1, 2, &3, Meditation Break (5-10Minutes led by experienced mindfulness meditation teacher Ms. Danielle Scanlon), Panel Discussion and Q&A.
Each Talk lasts 15 minutes.
Three guest speakers will form a panel, exchange ideas on below sharing topic and interact with the audience for Q&A session.

In an era being called the “Age of Anxiety” and a “mental health crisis”, the American Psychological Association reports that we often do not recognize our vulnerabilities to stress and mental health issues until we start to show up with physical health symptoms. While we cannot necessarily control the pressures of our modern demands altogether, or skirt the inevitable sufferings of life, to protect and elevate our mental health we can engage in mindful living.
Mindfulness means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment, through a gentle, nurturing lens. It means living in the moment and awakening to our current experience, rather than dwelling on the past or anticipating the future. When we are mindful, we carefully observe our thoughts and feelings without judging them as good or bad. When we’re mindful, we reduce stress, enhance performance, gain insight and awareness through observing our own mind, and increase our attention to others’ well-being.
Though Mindfulness derived from a significant element of Buddhist traditions, it has been used in today’s psychology sector with positive benefits including lowering stress levels, improving harmful ruminating, improving our overall health, and protecting against depression, anxiety and addiction.
