Spring Festival Fair
Bring along all your cheeky monkeys! DCNYF are delighted to present this year’s two-day Spring Festival Fair at The chq Building where you will be able to feast your senses at both indoors and outdoors activities. Along with Lion, Dragon and Unicorn performances there will also be an appearance of the famous Monkey King, or Sun Wukong, known as a character from Journey to the West, one of China’s classic novels.
All welcome! Join us over this celebratory weekend full of fun activities. No booking required, however, early arrival is recommended for participatory classes.
Sample festive meals such as Chinese dumplings, traditional Asian specialties, Chinese snacks and explore the beautiful custom of Chinese Tea ceremonies with members of the UCD Confucius Institute.
Enjoy music performances on the cucurbit flute, bamboo flute, Chinese pipa and guzheng. Learn how to play Chinese chess (xiangqi), Go (wéiqí), a more challenging ping pong game with pans and wooden spoons and other games.
Witness and sample the traditional Chinese form of Folk Art called Sugar painting (糖画) with Sugar Painting Artist Mr Liu Binbin from China, who using hot, liquid sugar will create two dimensional figures. A snack is popular among children. Selecting a figure is normally determined by spinning the arrow on a wheel
Participate in hands-on activities from paper-cutting, calligraphy, kite, lantern and red envelope (Huan Bao) making workshops to martial arts and dance demos capturing the mood of spring.
View a spectacular Fashion Show of Chinese traditional dress (Qipao) showcasing silk, and embroidered, with thick laces trimmed at the collar, sleeves and edges. The dress empresses of past dynasties wore them.
Watch the animation classic ‘The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven’ (1965) on Saturday 6th February and a live screening of the ‘2016 Chinese New Year Gala TV Show’ on Sunday 7th of February, a cultural phenomenon which more than 90% of Chinese families tune in on New Year’s Eve.
Make sure to be at The chq Building on Sunday 7th February at 5pm to enjoy a live outdoor spectacle. This weekend will be packed full of surprises for all members of the family to enjoy – not to be missed!
